BYOAI (Bring Your Own AI)
BYOAI is employees bringing personal AI accounts and tools into work — the consumer-tier subscriptions and free chatbots that sit outside corporate contracts and controls.
BYOAI — bring your own AI — describes employees using personally-acquired AI tools for work: a personal ChatGPT Plus subscription, a free Perplexity account, a Cursor install on a home machine. The organization gets the productivity; the data flows under consumer terms it never reviewed, often including training on inputs by default.
BYOAI is why an organization's contractual posture (enterprise seats, DPAs, no-training clauses) can be excellent while its actual exposure is not: the terms that matter are the ones attached to the account the employee is signed into at the moment of the paste.
