BYOAI (Bring Your Own AI)

BYOAI, short for bring your own AI, describes employees using personally acquired AI tools for work: a personal ChatGPT Plus subscription, a free Perplexity account, a Cursor install on a home machine. The organization gets the productivity, but the data flows under consumer terms it never reviewed, often including training on inputs by default.

It is common even where companies provide approved tools. Gartner (2026) found that 88% of employees with enterprise AI access also use personal AI tools. People reach for whichever tool is fastest, already open, or better at the task in front of them.

BYOAI is why an organization's contractual posture (enterprise seats, DPAs, no-training clauses) can be excellent while its actual exposure is not: the terms that matter are the ones attached to the account the employee is signed into at the moment of the paste.

BYOAI and shadow AI overlap but aren't the same. Shadow AI is any AI use the organization hasn't approved or can't see. BYOAI is its most common form, defined by who owns the account. A personal account on an approved tool is still BYOAI, because the consumer terms apply rather than the company's contract.

Banning BYOAI rarely works; it moves the activity to personal phones, where nothing is visible. Practical steps instead: provide a sanctioned tool that is as good as the ones people bring, publish an acceptable-use policy that says which accounts may be used for which data, get visibility into which AI tools are actually in use, and protect sensitive data at the prompt, whichever account it is headed to.
